In this video I’m joined by a fellow Change Coach, Suzie Yeulett. This is part one of a series of live videos we did on Instagram, diving into a fresh perspective on dealing with anxiety at work.
As certified Change Coaches, we take an alternative approach that really focuses on understanding how our minds work.
Key points include:
- Firstly, we explore how it’s important to know that our minds are constantly trying to keep us safe by filling in gaps and making predictions—this is what we call the survival brain. However, this ancient system can sometimes cause unnecessary stress and anxiety because it’s not always suited to modern life and it’s pressures.
- The understanding we are trained in takes a subtractive approach. By understanding that our thoughts are often just the mind's way of trying to protect us, we can take them less seriously, leading to less worry and a sense of freedom and ease.
- We illustrate this with the visual blind spot analogy, showing how our brain fills in gaps in vision. Similarly, our minds create stories that aren't always true.
- Work is a unique environment where many of our insecurities— like self-worth, money concerns, and relationships— can surface. This often leads to overthinking and anxiety, impacting productivity and happiness. When you're caught up in anxious thoughts about promotions or interactions with colleagues, it’s hard to stay focused and enjoy your job.
- Overthinking and projecting fears about future events or past experiences contribute significantly to workplace anxiety.
- Anxious feelings come from your mind's chatter — not from the actual circumstances at work. Once you realize this, you can start taking your thoughts less seriously and feel more at ease.
- Our approach is not about denying feelings but recognizing where they come from and knowing they will pass as part of our natural human design. Life becomes lighter when you stop carrying around buckets of worries that would have naturally moved on.
- Finally, understanding that everyone experiences the world through their own unique lens helps foster tolerance and better relationships at work. So next time you feel overwhelmed at work, recognise that your busy mind is just doing its job, but you don’t have to believe everything it says.
