Our experience of the same thing changes all the time

Updated: Mar 6, 2023

One of the things my coaching clients sometimes struggle to fully accept at first, is the inside-out nature of how our experience is created. Hell, I’ve struggled too!

We spend the vast majority of our lives being told, or believing, that it’s events or circumstances in the outside world that create how we feel and respond.

However this new paradigm of understanding how life works, shows that our ‘experience’ of the outside world comes from within us – 100% of the time. It comes to us via our thinking, via the power or Principle of Thought. And it’s Thought that brings feeling states with it. Two faces of the same coin.

One of the insights that helped me to really see the truth of this is when I noticed that my experience of the same thing changed, when the actual ‘thing’ hadn’t changed at all.

For example:

- Some days I can feel worried about the money we owe our credit card, other times I know we will pay it off and it is fine. This can change within one day, or one hour, even when the numbers on the credit card remain the same.

- My son is pretty much a bubble of energy every morning and is generally bouncing around and talkative. Sometimes I feel so much love for the energy and joy he exudes. Yet other times I feel frustrated and irritated and want him to be quiet….same behaviour, different experience. He hasn’t changed but my experience of him has.

- Sometimes I feel sad that we only have one child, others I feel so grateful to have one child. Same situation, different experience.

If my thoughts and feeling were coming from the outside world, how can my experience change when the outside world is the same?

It’s all coming from within us, not from ‘out there’. Therefore I can give up trying to control the outside, because quite frankly, it doesn’t make sense any more. Thought-energy is like the waves of the ocean, ebbing and flowing constantly, so we are never stuck with any experience. It always moves and shifts, even it returns as well.
