Feeling overwhelmed

Updated: Mar 6, 2023

My son and I were doing some colouring together recently (me in my adult colouring book, and he in his). When I opened the page I suddenly felt overwhelmed with where to start. It’s a pretty intricate book!

Because I know that the feeling of overwhelm can’t possibly be coming from the book, or the task ahead, but from my thinking about it, I took a breath and allowed my intuition to guide the process of where to start and which colours to use. Without much on my mind the colouring became a pleasure, an intuitive process.

Maybe this is a useful way to look at things if we are feeling overwhelmed in our lives, or with all the tasks we ‘need’ to complete.

Seeing that your mind will have plenty to say about all the things you have GOT to do and that this will keep you revved up in feelings of overwhelm. Also seeing that you have a choice not to listen to that. You can instead listen to the wiser part of yourself that knows exactly what to do next, taking one step, one moment at a time.

This isn’t about breaking tasks down into small parts, although that can be useful. It’s about seeing where the feeling of overwhelm is coming from – not from what we have to do but from our thinking about what we have to do.

Our ego mind loves to keep looking ahead to what we have to complete after this task is done. Whereas our wisdom or intuition tends to keep us focused in the present moment, on the very next step….where overwhelm doesn’t exist.
