Are you stressed about your to-do list?

Updated: Mar 2, 2023

Are you longing to get to the end of your to-do list? Do you dream about the (imaginary) day when you have NOTHING to do?!

I have been working with a client who is a busy working mum. She feels so much pressure about her to-do list and all the things she has to get done in the day. Her mind would constantly talk to her about all the things she ‘must’ get done today, what she has to do AFTER this task is over, and the next 3 things on her list, and how she is running out of time to get it all done.

Her stress and overwhelm levels were pretty high…unsurprising really.

As we worked together she came to see that the ‘pressure’ of the to-do list 100% came from all of the thinking she was having about it….the to-do list has absolutely no power to make her feel anything. It took a while for her to see the habitual pattern her brain had got into about the to-do list. And that the constant jumping ahead to the next thing, rather than being present with what she is doing right now, was the thing causing the stress, not the tasks she has to complete.

As well as this realisation, as my client also began to see through all the ‘musts’, ‘shoulds’ and ‘ought tos’ she is innocently believing buying into being important and ‘true’. As a consequence, the number of things on her to do list has reduced significantly. The pressure and stress about the day ahead has gone, now she knows how her mind is working in all this.

The internal peace we are looking for when our to do list is done, can be had RIGHT NOW. We don’t need to wait until we have nothing to left to do. If we simply focus on the task we are currently doing, and notice when we get pulled away by our lovely busy mind, we can come back to that peaceful place that is NOW.
