What if being triggered isn’t a setback?

Triggered by anxiety? Here’s why that’s not a setback

We’ve been taught that if something triggers us, if a wave of anxiety hits out of nowhere, it means we’re not coping well. That we’re stuck. That there’s something wrong with us.

But that’s not what’s happening.

In this video, I share a personal story about something traumatic that happened when one of my dogs was hit by a car (he survived, don’t worry). What followed — the anxiety, the flashbacks, the fear of repeating the experience — could have easily spiralled into avoidance and shutdown.

But here’s what I’ve learned:

Being triggered isn’t a problem to fix. It’s a moment to understand.

When we can separate the story our mind is telling from the sensation in our body, things start to shift. We stop avoiding. We stop spiralling. And we start letting the healing process do what it was built to do, naturally, over time.

This video is for anyone who’s ever felt anxious about being anxious. Who’s avoided something (or someone) because it brought up too much. Who’s thought, “I should be over this by now.”

You're not behind. You're not broken. Your mind is just trying to help in the only way it knows how.
